Aventuras Overseas: Amsterdam

Next up on my Euro hit-list of fab destinations is Amsterdam. Offering way more than its shallow stereotype of red lights and otherwise illicit substances suggests, Amsterdam is an ideal locale for those who long to experience a quieter, more mellow interpretation of an urban lifestyle. A cheery, friendly population fused with historic, centuries-old architecture and city planning makes for a great playground for exploration and touring. And what’s the preferred mode of transport for said exploration? Cyclists–not cars–rule the streets here, so renting a bike is a MUST. MacBike is a very popular and reliable rental company, with its recognizable fleet of “the famous red bikes,” and four outposts scattered throughout the city center. Joining the ranks of thousands of seemingly fearless bikers zooming through the streets can be daunting, but is an opportunity not to be missed. Fun fact: there are more bikes than people in Holland. So when in Rome Amsterdam, right? Once you’re mobile, there’s no shortage of history and culture to be enjoyed here. Visit the former home of Anne Frank at Prinsengracht 263 and for some lighter contemplation, see the masterpieces on view at the Van Gogh Museum or the Rijksmuseum for its huge collection of Old Masters works like those of Rembrant and Vermeer. Be sure to spend time biking or strolling across the many canals that weave through the city and lend it its mellow tone. The near-omnipresent water has a calming effect and is equally beautiful with the sun streaming in on a pretty day, or at night, reflecting the lights and life of surrounding bars or homes. For us interior design fans, Amsterdam offers something really special with its informal custom of large, open and uncovered windows that allow passersby a chance to peek into the beautiful houses that line the canals and winding streets. Eschewing closed blinds and privacy as others may understand it, home owners are proud to allow viewers to get a glimpse into their well-designed, often expensive interiors. What a treat! Bottom line: If you want to be charmed by a historic European city that thrives in its alternative approach to a happy (a recent Gallup poll shows Netherlands residents as among the happiest in the world), often quaint (but never boring!!) way of life, visit Amsterdam to see what all the smiling is about.
