Made In Turkey: The Evolution of Fine Turkish Towels

by CassaDecor on November 20, 2009

Turkish bath towels are an ancient luxury that still holds value in modernity. Made of the finest cotton, these towels are the most elegant and essential accessory needed to create the ultimate bath experience. For centuries, Turkish cotton has reformed the standard of luxury and self indulgence. In our present day, Turkey maintains its dominance as one of the world’s top three suppliers of cotton towels. How has it survived the times while maintaining its title as champion bath linen? The history of these plush towels will reveal both its resiliency throughout times, and as a product.

Origins

The world was first introduced to the towels in Babadag, a small town in Southern Turkey. The country itself was no stranger to the design industry. Historically, Turkey was the world’s largest producer and weaver of cotton. Towels manufactured at that time were flat and lacked depth and a sumptuous feel. It is said an ancient rug weaver desired to make a towel in the same manner which he created carpets. As with his rugs, the craftsman blended woven loops into the towels. The result was pure luxury, a softer feel, and greater absorbency. Centuries later, the Ottomans would enhance the fancy weaving style.

Roman Tradition

Turkish towels were an important part of Turkish society. They were commonly used during ceremonial baths for brides before their wedding. In addition, the cotton towels were essential to hamam or Turkish baths. Like ancient Roman baths, these baths were a popular pastime in Turkish society. They were used as a method of not only cleansing the body, but also relaxation. To accommodate the communal activity, Turkish towels were pieced into collections. Full body towels became available for the masses.

Traditional Qualities & Criteria

Unlike typical cotton towel sets, Turkish towels are made from premium cotton with extra long fibers. By using longer fibers, these towels have less joins that provide a stronger and smoother feel. In order to be classified as a choice towel, there are certain guidelines that must be met. Towels must be made from 100% cotton with no substitutes (e.g. terrycloth).  Each towel must adhere to a fabric weight of 14 ounces per square yard. Finally, they must be white and undyed. Turkish society believed that towels in pure white offer an unaltered, timeless quality.

Turkish Benefits

Turkish towels are more absorbent than your typical cotton towels. Their looped construction offers a more thick material creating a plusher and softer feel. Unlike their Egyptian counterpart, Turkish towels have a strong balance between absorbency and drying. These are the best material for people with allergies as they are unbleached and are grown without pesticides.

Modern Day Luxury

Turkish towels without a doubt have transformed luxury living. Traditional guidelines have been exchanged for a wider selection of designs in the fancy cloth. More companies are now offering more diversity in the comfy bath linens. Towels can now be purchased in a variety of designs including colors that have not been previously available. Luxurious bathrobes made from Turkish terry with coordinating slippers are bestsellers.
