Modern Mexican Dining at Empellón Taquería
February 21, 2012
Given my affection for tacos, when I saw that Empellón had been receiving high praises from just about every NYC publication for their take on the dish, I knew it was time for a visit. Boasting what are arguably some of the best in city, this taquería definitely puts the Mexican staple in high culinary regards. You’ll not only find the usual offering of steak, chicken, and fish, but lobster, scallop and even tongue tacos to name a few, and just as they are in no short supply of taco options, their salsa choices are nothing to laugh at. Their salsa verde was sweet, crisp, and had that added kick of peppers at the end of each bite, and the tomatillo-chipotle salsa had a wonderful smoky taste. Add their fresh guacamole, filled with chunks of avocado, to this mix and you have the perfect compliment to your meal. Their dedication to fine quality tacos is apparent once the flavor hits your mouth with the mixture of spices and sauces that creates something unique, fresh, and delicious. While options like the skirt steak with mojo de ajo (olive oil, lime juice, and toasted garlic) are good, it is the seafood dishes that make the biggest impression, and the scallop tacos (below) come highly recommended. They were incredibly sweet and the complement of the capers and spicy raisin puree gave the tacos a slightly nutty taste. So, if you are looking to fill that craving for the authentic and creative make your reservation at Empellón now.
