“Somebody That I Used to Know” – Gotye ft. Kimbra
February 27, 2012
Today’s Music Monday features the song “Somebody That I Used to Know,” which has been popping up on my various playlists for a few weeks now. Released on the latest album from Gotye, pronounced Go-tee-yay, the artist teamed up with New Zealand star Kimbra to create this striped down, slow building song, that makes for a generally unexpected international chart topper. But managing to hit #1 in his native Australia, Gotye also climbed up the charts in a slew of European countries. And now gaining more coverage in the U.S., with appearances on various television soundtracks, he proves once again that the synth-sound that ruled the 80′s is being incorporated in today’s music in a big way. One of the song’s main strengths is how each artists’ voice compliments each other in a way that makes you get lost in their harmonies and forget that the song lacks any prominent instrumentals. Combine this with the honest lyrical argument between two people and you have a formula for something quite special. So, our next step is to explore more of what Gotye’s latest album, Making Mirrors, has to offer. Let us know in the comments below what you think of our music find, and don’t forget to tell us some of your latest music discoveries.
