The latest band to pique my interest, Big Deal, is the UK guitar playing duo Kacey Underwood and Alice Costelloe. Bringing an edgy feel to folk music, Underwood’s deeper voice plays off of Costelloe’s angelic vocals, making for a sound that is modern, yet pleasantly familiar. After signing to Mute records, joining the ranks of many established indie artists, the band released their debut album Lights Out just last fall. Now, after more single and music video releases, including their take on the classic Jesus and Mary chain song Sometimes Always which came out just last week, they’ve begun generating … (read more).

Despite the slightly somber note of the Grammys last night, due to the untimely death of pop sensation, Whitney Houston and the loss of the great Etta James just a few weeks prior, the show brought joy to some repeat winners including pop-soul singer Adele. Upon its debut she was propelled into the spotlight as listeners were drawn to her heartfelt, candid lyrics and emotionally charged vocal range. When Alan Palomo entered the music scene in 2009 as Neon Indian, there was an instant buzz around his unique sound. Now, with the release of his sophomore album Era Extraña and single “Polish Girl,” his popularity has been on the rise. We found a great live version thanks once again to KEXP, so enjoy below and let us know what you think of Neon Indian’s latest single: image … (read more).

When indie-rock band, Grouplove released their debut album Never Trust a Happy Song, it was refreshingly playful, fused with a mix of rock riffs, catchy beats, and plenty of shouting in unison. Happy New Year, Music Monday readers! Today, we’re highlighting the song that placed at the top of many ‘best of 2011’ music lists – “Midnight City” by French electronic band M83. If you missed Friendly Fires‘ sophomore album, Pala, when it came out in May of this year, then allow us to introduce you to the English trio. Establishing themselves as creators of modern, disco-pop music with their debut album, it was in Pala where they explored the genre of techno funk even more. The band is at its best when they find just the right amount of 80s nostalgia mixed with modern electronic beats, in songs like “Hurting” (seen below). The video will not only put a smile on your face, but is sure to make you want to get … (read more).
