    Spotlight On: Brooklyn’s Nightwood

CassaBlog is always on the hunt for design companies and brands that help to pioneer the eco-revolution, and New York furniture store Nightwood is a prime example. The store, which just had its opening in Williamsburg this past Saturday (and was previously operating out of a pop-up in downtown BK), features “reincarnated” furniture (tables, chairs, desks, couches and more), textiles, and even some home items like acrylic paintings. Business and life partners Myriah Scruggs and Nadia Yaron use rescued wood and old furniture bases to create new, mostly one of a kind pieces with an earthy, raw vibe. Their textiles … (read more).

The overall lifestyle that this collection promotes is a feeling of minimalism and worldliness that one can see, feel, and even smell, while journeying through this “Zen” world. Organic Cotton Disappearing From Some Designers; Not Us!

New York Magazine and the Times have recently reported on the phasing out of organic cotton collections from many high-end denim designers. A couple years ago luxury denim brands like 7 For All Mankind and J Brand got on board with the green trend and introduced eco-friendly versions of their jeans, made from organic fabrics. We all applauded the effort, but recently these eco-conscious products have been removed from the label’s lines because the designers were having difficulty designing organic denim that could retain shape the way regular jeans do. That CassaBlog cannot applaud. It’s true environmentally-friendly textiles may, in … (read more).

“Eco-Fashion: Going Green” @ The Museum at FIT, NY.

It’s a fact! The green movement has taken over fashion and designers are becoming more and more aware of the terrible consequences some practices like textile dyeing and production can have on the planet. The origins of eco-consciousness are often attributed to hippies and the environmental movement of the 1960’s; however, there is a historical background for this ecological approach prior to the mid-twentieth century. The Museum at FIT presents Eco-Fashion: Going Green, an exhibition that explores the longstanding and complex relationship between fashion and the environment presenting both bad and good ecological practices of the past 250 years.
