Towel Evolution: A Brief Look at Trends and Bestsellers

by CassaDecor on June 28, 2009

Throughout the decades, the concept of a “towel” has continuously transformed to serve a multitude of functions. As eras changed, towels have enhanced concentrating on both form and purpose.

Materials used to make towels have drastically advanced. Cotton and linen still remain the two most common materials used for their absorbent quality. Many synthetic materials (e.g. microfiber) have been chemically altered to hold higher amounts of liquid. Bamboo towels are a new innovation that offers an organic touch to the bathroom. Drying faster than cotton, bamboo towels are biodegradable and have a natural anti-bacterial ability.

One thing that has remained consistent with the times is towel size in relation to its purpose. Dish and hand towels are typically smaller in size and often target a specific area. Bath and beach towels are larger in appearance and are made in such a way to absorb more moisture. Kitchen towels are more susceptible to daily spills and thus are less in weight.

Towels also function to signify status and character. Decorative and embroidered towels continue to dominate the home décor industry with classic jacquard looms and floral prints. Monogrammed hand towels are a timeless piece for bathrooms providing a stately look. Turkish towels are high end cotton towels that offer a minimalist look and softer feel. These towels are commonly displayed in guest bathrooms for greater visibility. Trendy towels with polka dots and prints are a common dorm room favorite amongst college students. Tweens and kids also love selecting bright towels to coordinate with bathroom accessories.

When selecting towels it is important to choose a brand based on your individual need and application.
